What weightage does professional experience have in M7 and T15 MBA admissions?

Q) What weightage does professional experience have in M7 and T15 MBA admissions?

I would say your professional experience contributes 60% towards M7 and Top 15 MBA admissions. Now this professional experience can be presented in multiple creative and impactful ways depending on the consultant's skills in branding and guiding applicants with the right essay writing tips.

MBA and Personal Branding

MBA degree adds to your personal brand.

Career Progression, Unique Milestones & Leadership Roles

Your professional brand in a 3-5 year career is to a large extend dictated by your career progression, unique professional milestones, leadership roles, cross-functional skills and cross-cultural collaboration if you are applying to an International MBA program.

Your professional milestones and promotions matter more when you are coming from a competitive consulting, finance or technology careers.

Scenario: 40% on Extra-Curricular, Volunteering and Entrepreneurial Experience

But let us say that you had a typical professional career, your promotions are competitive - that is 1-2 promotions within 3-5 years, then the 40% weightage on extra-curricular, volunteering and  entrepreneurial experience matter even more.

Find Complementary Traits

The life outside your work should capture qualities that cannot be captured in your professional career.

Limitations of Technology/Finance Roles

There are limitation on creative solutions that a team accepts based on the function - if you are in Technology or Finance, the culture of the client (if you are in consulting), and the many restrictions and priorities that organizations have while implementing a solution.

Entrepreneurial Experience - Valued the Most

But if you have an entrepreneurial experience that involve ideation, finding a creating solution, networking to create partnerships, implementing a marketing plan, interacting with customers, figuring out pricing, customer service and developing a product, that experience is equivalent to doing 3-4 volunteering engagements over a period of 1-2 years.

Entrepreneurial Applicants and Slow Job Market

During slow job markets like the 2023, 2012-13, and even during the pandemic, an applicant with entrepreneurial experience had more value not just for admissions but also in converting internships.

Organizations don't just prefer functional experts.

They want leaders with excellent learning skills so that they can take on more functions, lead teams and adapt to challenging market conditions just like how an entrepreneur does.

Strategically Include Volunteering Experiences

For applicants with no entrepreneurial experience but 3-5 volunteering experiences over a period of 5 years, you should choose to highlight volunteering experience according to your professional function and industry.

The skills and personality traits highlighted in the volunteering or extra-curricular experiences should complement your professional traits.
