The skills that a writer/editor brings to the table are different from what a former admissions officer or a consultant who has limited writing skills brings

Review Skills # Writing Skills
Movie Critics # Movie Directors

It is easy to comment, but it is tough to structure the essay from the perspective of the applicant and turn the essay into a winning application essay.

3) Aligning with the Culture of the School

A big part of editing and guiding applicants is in educating them about the culture of the school

Some schools have very ‘specific’ traits that they are looking for in an applicant.

If you don’t highlight them and lean towards general leadership or cultural narratives, the essay won’t work.

I will guide you through the writing process.

HEC Paris MiM Essay Tips

Essay 1: Why are you applying to the Master in Management at HEC Paris? (250 words)

How to Approach

Introduction: State Your Motivation Clearly
Start by addressing your primary motivation for pursuing the HEC Paris MIM program.

Be clear and specific about why you chose this program and how it fits your long-term goals.

Avoid general statements like "HEC Paris is a top school." Instead, focus on aspects that resonate with you personally, whether it’s the international opportunities, the practical curriculum, or the school's values.

Example: Mr. A, an HEC MIM student with a background in mechanical engineering and entrepreneurship, could mention his passion for the automotive industry and how HEC’s entrepreneurial spirit, as highlighted in the school's values, aligns with his ambition to innovate in the automobile sector.

Highlight HEC’s Unique Offerings

Discuss specific features of the MIM program that appeal to you. Mention elements such as the optional gap year, which allows students to gain practical experience, or the specializations in M2 that let you tailor your studies.

If applicable, refer to the Double Degree programs or international exchanges that can help you develop a global business mindset. These are key differentiators of the HEC Paris program, and linking them to your personal interests will show a clear alignment between your goals and what the school offers.

Example: Mr. A could express his interest in HEC’s Double Degree programs, especially the potential to collaborate with international partners in technology-driven sectors. With a keen focus on automobiles and entrepreneurship, he might be drawn to the Strategy for Impact certificate, which equips students with leadership skills to drive significant industry changes.

Explain How HEC Will Shape Your Career

In this section, outline how HEC Paris will help you achieve your career objectives. Mention specific career services, alumni networks, and on-campus recruitment events. HEC’s 60,000+ alumni network and extensive corporate connections provide substantial support to students entering diverse fields. Also, highlight how the MIM program’s practical approach—like business projects, internships, and access to certificates—will offer the hands-on experience you need.

Example: Mr. A, who has interned in operations consultancy and automobile design, could emphasize how HEC’s gap year or internships with global corporations would deepen his practical experience in consultancy and design. He could also reference the school's alumni network as a way to connect with influential leaders in his industry.

Tie Your Aspirations to HEC’s Values and Mission

HEC Paris is known for its commitment to societal impact, and this is a great opportunity to demonstrate how your goals align with the school’s mission to “IMPACT business and society through research, education, and action."

Be sure to show how you embody the school’s values, such as entrepreneurial spirit, responsibility, and excellence.

Mention how you can contribute to the HEC community and how these values resonate with your career path.

Example: Mr. A could connect his entrepreneurial experience in developing innovative technologies for the automotive sector to HEC’s entrepreneurial spirit. He might reflect on how he intends to use his time at HEC to launch initiatives that contribute to automotive technologies with a low carbon footprint, aligning with the school’s responsibility value.

Conclude with a Forward-Looking Statement

Conclude your essay with a forward-thinking statement.

Discuss how you plan to contribute to the HEC community and how the program will equip you to lead in your chosen industry. Keep this part concise but impactful, showing that you are not only focused on personal gain but also on adding value to the HEC ecosystem.

Example: Mr. A could conclude by stating that he aims to leverage HEC’s entrepreneurial resources, such as the HEC Incubator, to create a venture in sustainable automotive solutions, contributing to the school’s mission of impacting business and society in a responsible manner.

Essay 2: Tell us about your career goals. Which sectors, companies, and functions are you interested in? (250 words)

How to Approach

Define Clear Career Goals with Specificity

Start by outlining a clear vision of your long-term career goals.

Be specific about the industries, companies, and roles you're interested in.

Avoid vague or broad statements such as "I want to work in business." Instead, focus on particular sectors (e.g., technology, luxury, consulting), specific companies (e.g., Google, LVMH, McKinsey), and desired functions (e.g., product management, strategy consulting, or business development).

Example: Mr. A, passionate about automobiles and entrepreneurship, could mention his aspiration to become an entrepreneur in the automotive technology space. He could specify companies like Tesla or Ather Energy and roles such as business development or product management in the automotive sector. By doing so, he would demonstrate his focused ambition to innovate within the industry.

HEC Program Alignment: Mr. A might highlight the relevance of the “Energy & Finance” or “Entrepreneurship in a Digital Age” certificates offered by HEC. These interdisciplinary courses align perfectly with his career goals and would help strengthen his expertise in building sustainable automotive solutions.

Explain Why These Sectors/Companies Appeal to You

After defining your career goals, explain why you are drawn to these sectors, companies, and functions.

Reflect on your previous academic and professional experiences or personal interests and how they have shaped your ambitions.

Ensure that your passion and rationale behind choosing these fields come through.

Example: Mr. A, with his background in mechanical engineering and projects like “Gear Ratio Optimisation for EV Truck” at IIT Bombay, might explain that his interest in electric vehicles stems from his hands-on experience in the automotive field. His participation in IIT Bombay Racing also sparked his interest in pursuing leadership roles in the electric vehicle (EV) sector.

HEC Program Alignment: Mr. A could reference the “Design and Manufacturing” courses at HEC Paris to further enhance his technical and managerial skills. He might also mention HEC’s global network in the automotive and tech industries, which aligns with his goal to enter this sector internationally.

Highlight How HEC Paris Will Help Achieve Your Career Goals

This is where you align your career aspirations with the specific offerings of HEC Paris.

Discuss how HEC’s curriculum, international opportunities, and extracurricular activities will help you reach your goals. Focus on courses, certificates, study trips, or alumni networks that directly relate to your intended sector or career path.

Example: Mr. A, aiming to start his own venture in the automobile industry, could highlight HEC Paris’ strong focus on entrepreneurship through the “Entrepreneurship in a Digital Age” certificate. He could also mention HEC’s optional gap year as a chance to gain real-world experience in automotive companies like Tesla or Ather, giving him the practical insights needed to launch his business.

HEC Program Alignment: Mr. A could showcase how the Double Degree Program with partner universities or the Master Exchange Program (MEP) will provide him the international exposure necessary for launching a successful global automotive business. He could also highlight the relevance of the “Private Equity & Infrastructure” certificate for raising capital for his venture.

Showcase Past Experiences That Align with Your Goals

Support your essay with specific examples of past work, internships, or projects that have prepared you for your future goals. This adds credibility and demonstrates that you have both the experience and motivation to pursue your career path.

Example: Mr. A’s experience as a Design Engineer at IIT Bombay Racing and his internship in operations consultancy in Goa could be highlighted to showcase his deep involvement in automotive design and operational strategy. His project on “Welding of Al Alloys for Space Applications” reflects his technical background and problem-solving skills, which are essential for success in his chosen industry.

Express Long-Term Vision Beyond Immediate Roles

In addition to discussing your short-term career goals, convey a long-term vision that shows growth, ambition, and alignment with HEC Paris’ values. This could involve leadership aspirations, entrepreneurial ventures, or contributing to specific industries or social causes.

Example: Mr. A could mention his long-term goal of becoming a leader in the EV space, focusing on sustainable and innovative automotive solutions. His vision might include setting up an automotive startup that focuses on environmentally friendly vehicle designs and operations. Mr. A might reference HEC Paris’ mission to “impact business and society” and align his long-term goal of developing green technology in the automotive industry with HEC’s focus on sustainability through initiatives like the “Climate & Business” certificate and research opportunities in sustainable innovation.

Essay 3: How do you contribute to and make an impact in the community? Will you continue contributing as a graduate of HEC? Please define “community” in your answer. (200 words)

When addressing this essay question, prospective students need to reflect on their personal experiences, define their concept of community, and demonstrate how they will contribute to society beyond their time at HEC Paris. Here are detailed tips and specific insights to help you craft a standout response:

Define "Community" and Your Role

Start by defining what "community" means to you. It could be a geographical area, an organization, a professional group, or even a cause you are passionate about. It’s important to choose a community you’ve genuinely engaged with and explain how you’ve contributed to its well-being, development, or growth. Ensure your definition is personal and connects to your experiences.

Tip: Be specific and avoid abstract definitions. If you’ve been part of a student organization, worked on a local environmental project, or supported an underrepresented group, mention it clearly. Define how your role in that community has been impactful.

Example (Mr. A): Mr. A might define his community as the automotive engineering and sustainability sector, given his background in projects such as “Gear Ratio Optimization for EV Truck” / He could discuss how his work in engineering contributes to the growth of sustainable mobility, highlighting his impact within the technological community.

Highlight Specific Contributions and Impact

Focus on tangible contributions you’ve made in your community. Provide examples that show your initiative, leadership, and the change or impact you created. Whether it's through leading a team, volunteering, or being involved in meaningful projects, give specific anecdotes that display your proactive nature.

Tip: Use examples to quantify your impact where possible. Describe challenges you encountered and how you overcame them. Frame your contributions as a result of problem-solving and leadership.

Example (Mr. A): Mr. A could discuss his involvement with IIT Bombay Racing, where he worked as a Design Engineer, contributing to innovative automotive projects. He could highlight the impact of creating energy-efficient designs and how his work helped promote sustainable practices in automotive technology.

Connect to HEC Paris and Future Contributions

Discuss how you plan to continue contributing to communities after joining HEC Paris and beyond graduation.

Connect your current and future goals to the values and opportunities at HEC Paris, such as their focus on leadership and societal impact.

Mention specific HEC initiatives like the Inclusive & Social Business Certificate or joining the HEC Paris Alumni Association as ways you’ll contribute to the broader global community.

Tip: Show that you align with HEC Paris’ mission of having an impact on business and society through education and action.
Be explicit about how the school’s resources will enable you to make even greater contributions.

Mention programs, clubs, or alumni networks that will help you enhance your impact.

Example (Mr. A): Mr. A could express his desire to contribute to the HEC community by leveraging his expertise in sustainability and engineering. He could mention plans to engage in the Energy & Finance Certificate at HEC, focusing on sustainable energy solutions. Additionally, he could outline how he would utilize the HEC Alumni Network to drive further advancements in the green automotive sector globally.

Demonstrate Continuity in Impact

It’s crucial to express how you will continue contributing to your community after you graduate.

Showcase your long-term vision and how HEC Paris will be a catalyst for that. This part should emphasize your commitment to making a lasting impact, not just during your time at school but in your career and life beyond.

Tip: Make it clear that your contributions won’t end with your time at HEC Paris.

Highlight how the international network, double degrees, and exchange programs will help you maintain a global perspective and stay connected to communities worldwide.

Example (Mr. A): Mr. A could explain how his participation in the Double Degree Program at HEC Paris and a top engineering school would allow him to expand his knowledge in both management and sustainability. He might also emphasize how, as an HEC graduate, he plans to be an active member of the HEC Alumni Association to foster collaborations that advance sustainability in the global automotive industry.

Align with HEC Paris' Mission and Values

HEC Paris values leadership, responsibility, diversity, and entrepreneurial spirit. Be sure to align your response with these values, showing that your contributions are not just about personal achievement but also about fostering a diverse and inclusive environment that benefits society.

Tip: Reference HEC’s core values explicitly in your essay. If you’ve led initiatives that reflect these values—like promoting diversity, driving social change, or showing entrepreneurial spirit—be sure to emphasize these points in your response.

Example (Mr. A): Mr. A could highlight his entrepreneurial spirit by mentioning his work with NoQs Digital, where he gained experience in web development. He could then connect this to HEC Paris’ value of responsibility by explaining how he intends to launch sustainable tech solutions that benefit both the business and societal realms.

Final Take
In this essay, demonstrate your genuine commitment to the community you define, your specific contributions, and how HEC Paris will empower you to extend your impact globally.

Draw on your past experiences, connect them to HEC’s vast opportunities, and present a forward-thinking vision for your role in society as a graduate of HEC Paris.

Essay 4: What is one piece of advice you would give to your younger self? (100 words)

How to Approach

Reflect on Personal Growth and Insight

When answering this essay, think about a key lesson or piece of advice that has been significant in shaping your mindset or approach to life. Choose something personal yet meaningful, demonstrating how that advice has influenced your personal and professional journey.

Avoid giving vague or generic advice such as "work harder" or "follow your dreams." Instead, focus on advice that conveys self-awareness and maturity, showing how you've grown as an individual.

Example: Mr. A, an HEC Paris MIM student with a passion for cars and entrepreneurship, could share advice like, "Take more risks and don’t be afraid of failure." His experience in projects like Gear Ratio Optimization for EV Trucks demonstrates his entrepreneurial spirit and willingness to innovate. He might explain how, earlier in his career, taking bold steps helped him develop confidence in applying innovative solutions, which aligns with HEC Paris’ value of “Entrepreneurial Spirit.”

Align with HEC Paris’ Values

Link your advice to one of the core values of HEC Paris, such as curiosity, excellence, responsibility, diversity, or entrepreneurial spirit. This will showcase your alignment with the school’s mission and your potential contribution to its community. For example, if your advice emphasizes curiosity, explain how it has led you to seek new experiences, explore different fields, or challenge assumptions.

Example: Mr. A’s experience at IIT Bombay in Radio Controlled Plane design could highlight his curiosity. He might advise his younger self to “always be curious and ask questions,” tying this to HEC Paris’ mission to “THINK and push the boundaries of knowledge.” His background in mechanical engineering and his desire to innovate could emphasize how curiosity is at the heart of his journey.

Essay 5: Please describe your ideal dinner party: who would you invite and why, what would you do? Anything is possible. (250 words)

How to Approach:

Selecting Your Guests: Aligning With HEC Values

Start by carefully selecting guests who resonate with your values and who have traversed a similar path.

Your choice should reflect responsible leadership.

Don't quote functional superstars.

Automobile: Elon Musk
Technology: Jensen Huang
Politics: <insert your favorite politician>

This is a sure way to go unnoticed or worse, antagonize the admissions team.

The school values diversity, responsibility, and entrepreneurial spirit, not just entrepreneurial spirit.

One great scientist you must explore is Jonas Salk, who invented the Polio Vaccine.

He famously refused to patent the vaccine. This was at a time when nearly half a million people worldwide were dying of polio, and thousands were getting paralyzed.

Explore and find great leaders who applied their entrepreneurial thinking responsibly.

You are unlikely to find unblemished heroes.

Remember HEC Paris Values: Curiosity, Excellence, Diversity, Responsibility, and Entrepreneurial Spirit

Impact and Conclusion: Looking to the Future
Conclude by reflecting on the impact of the dinner party on your overall vision.

Tip: Emphasize the broader impact of your dinner party and how the ideas discussed align with the vision of HEC Paris to contribute to “a more inclusive, prosperous, and sustainable world.”

Final Take
The key to answering this essay question is to blend your interests and ambitions with the insights the dinner guest could offer. The answer should also demonstrate your skills in converting ideas and network to actionable next steps.
