In the fifth example, we look at the profile of an African American applicant, who translated her passion for Football to Sports Media. Starting in an unconventional career as an Orthodontist, the social impact that she felt helping children in Africa with cleft lips didn’t compensate for the intellectual emptiness of the profession.

The pivot to Football as a person in charge of sales was the first time she felt connected to a career.

Through the collaboration with agencies, clients, sportsperson, coaches, and the eco-system that thrive with the industry, the applicant received another responsibility; to lead the creation of an Athlete-Fan mentorship program.

The unique challenges of working with the sports team, the fans, and understanding the narratives in the culture & popular media, helped her develop a program that continues to thrive.

<W> media noticed her contribution and offered a Media Planner role to facilitate sales of $10M of their assets. The three years with the company, although professionally and personally satisfying, brought back the question she always had – “Am I maximizing my potential?”

A family friend approached her seeking help pivoting from a stadium-bound business to a takeout model when the COVID-19 crisis decimated the food vendor business and the thousands of food purveyors who depended on major sporting events.

While strategizing to connect the sports experience with niche snacks, the applicant realized the potential to disrupt the sub-industry with technology, healthy ingredients, and a wide array of products that cater to a health-conscious younger audience.

The pursuit to enter the F&B industry, specifically to innovate the food vendor model, is cited as the motivation for Chicago Booth MBA.
