How to Answer the INSEAD MBA career description Essay?

INSEAD MBA Job Essay 3: Please give a full description of your career since graduating from university. Describe your career path with the rationale behind your choices. (200 Words)

Reasons for the Change
If your change in job was due to other reasons and the job title remained the same, clearly articulate the reasons that could include the narrow functional role, broader roles, lack of direction, or limited processes/market reach/exposure. Avoid mentioning personal reasons or your dynamics with the supervisor unless it is absolutely necessary.

Travel Opportunities
The admissions team expects you to mention travel opportunities as a reason for the change in job. Most consulting engagements involve client-facing interactions. High stake deals (M&A) also involve traveling to the client location for due diligence. So are PE deals to dissect the threats and opportunities. Even a technology career could be planned by targeting employers that have a high number of international clients. Whatever has been your motivation to choose an employer, include travel opportunities or international exposure as a reason for the job change.

Change in Function and Industry
If you had the opportunity to change function and industry after university, including the circumstances that led to the change. An inspiring narrative on persistence that influenced the employer to take the risk on you could be used as a strategic opener for this essay.

INSEAD MBA Profile Example: A profile with 4 years of experience in Fixed Income and Derivative sales who completed her BA in Media and Communications  with Commerce elective. Despite an average grade in the commerce elective, the sheer determination to join the Investment banking industry, first through an internship in market research during university and later leveraging the network to land a part-time offer as an Equity Research Analyst, spearheaded the change in career for the applicant. After sending 100+ resumes and knocking on several doors, she finally landed an offer with a leading US bank, first as a trading analyst then promoted into  Sales.

Sample Essay: Description of your Career since Graduating University (183 Words)

After acting in 30 plays and winning 2 best actress awards, I had set my eyes on Hollywood. A 2-year audition process with no break prompted me to join as an undergraduate in Media and Communication with a commerce elective. It was during the 2nd year that I watched <y’s> talk on IMPACT investing and found Finance as a tool for social and business transformation.

After 300+ calls and over 25 interviews, I landed a ....
....

Pro Tip: The narrative is a good example of how to strategically highlight a failure in one line, “A 2-year audition process with no break prompted me to join as an undergraduate in” and then expand on it in the failure essay.

With 200 words, highlighting all the roadblocks is not possible. In this case, the applicant hinted at a “fish out of water” narrative that could be expanded in the INSEAD achievement or failure essay. By only highlighting metrics that capture the scale of the responsibility (50 clients) and the persistence (300+ calls and 25 interviews), she describes her career since university and choices in the most succinct manner without losing the opportunity to ‘narrate’ the events.

Unlike other job description essays, you can include some elements of storytelling.
