Sample LBS MBA Essay: Post-MBA Goals (Non-Profit to Technology)

In this example, we look at the fictitious profile of a Program Manager, who has five years serving in a US-based international aid organization that serves in resolving issues in global hunger, disease-control, extremism, and climate change. The impetus to change the career path from Government to Technology happened in 2017 while serving as the primary point of contact for a technology firm that was integrating technology in the organization’s fund allocation, beneficiary tracking, and project implementation.

The first paragraph starts with the Ivory Coast conflict in 2010 that killed 3000 people. After offering context on the political upheaval, the applicant transitions into the moment when Z - the international aid organization is called for help. As the Program Manager for the organization, the campaign that she initiated and the communication channels she opened, started the peace-making process.

The second paragraph starts with her core achievement. By organizing social events and tuning the collective imagination of the citizens towards what is possible in a stable political environment, she cites her role in ending the 6-month violence. The next line summarizes her skills. With an overview of her success in the public sector, she shares a caveat. The delay in implementations from inefficient fund allocation, technology integration, and project approval had human costs. The 2017 encounter with E - a private firm engaged in integrating technology to the organization is cited as her 'career-changing' moment.

The third paragraph affirms her faith in the power of start-ups in transforming legacy systems and specifically mentions the Founder of E (the start-up) as her inspiration. The complete overview of Z's workflow that the founder had helped him transform the organization with the right technology. The applicant seeks to help a similar start-up in the FinTech space that is innovative but lacks the processes to scale. The LBS MBA core is cited as a value-add in her post-MBA role in Operations.

The fourth paragraph expands on her desire to participate in the Tech and Media, and Entrepreneurship club to understand and gain exposure about start-ups that have successfully gained traction in FinTech despite aggressive regulatory oversight. Quickly, she transitions into her plans for contributing towards the Global Business Experience (GBE) in South Africa. As someone, who has extensively worked in Africa alongside Entrepreneurs, applicant's guidance would offer tremendous value for the GBE team.

The final paragraph is a warning against relying on the 'goodness of leaders.' As someone, who saw a dictator nationalize $2B valued private enterprises in one day, the applicant is aware of the fragility of traditional financial systems and envisions a long-term role as an investor in the FinTech space, helping citizens overcome the risk of dictators and gain access to a system that is not easily manipulated by corruption, systemic failure, and inefficiencies.
