Background Information: Coming from an illustrious business family, the applicant found her true calling, serving the displaced at UNHCR – the UN’s agency assisting refugees to return to their home country or integrate/resettle in another country. 

Theme: Privilege 

Theme (Explained): A narrative on privilege can turn political if we focus on the wrong privilege. But across political aisles and cultures, there is an agreement that financial security is a privilege, security is a privilege, health is a privilege, and education is a privilege. For the essay, I have focused on financial and security as privileges.

Profile: Consultant

Industry: Non-Profit, Government

MBA Essay Strategy: Talking about privilege can turn into a cliché. The first draft of the essay had lines about paparazzi and fame, but if I had put too much emphasis on the experience, the essay’s focus would shift to fame. The larger theme of the essay is about using privilege for the good of society. 

The applicant’s evolution of a belief that privilege has no value to privilege in networking has the potential to transform war-affected regions is the theme of the essay. 

Opener: The essay starts with the burden of being known as the daughter of a famed business personality.

As a teenager, I hid my father’s legendary surname. The chaos of fame set my mind to seek professions that were as close to the real world as possible. For the summer of my 11th grade, I volunteered and joined UNHCR, assisting with aid allocation to war-torn countries.
