Background Information: A technologist narrates the leadership traits he acquired from his entrepreneur father. 

The work ethics, temperament, treating employees with respect, the struggle and the challenges of running a restaurant business in an information age is the basis for his leadership development. 

Theme: Leadership

Theme (Explained): Acquiring leadership traits from entrepreneurial parents is a theme that has slowly built into a common narrative for 2nd generation Americans. Immigrant parents, their work ethics and drive to live the American dream leads to interesting passing of attributes and motivations to children. 

The experience of feeding the hungry in NYC is an example the applicant quotes to demonstrate his experience to scale the operation to serve beneficiaries in war-affected middle-east.

MBA Essay Strategy: I wanted to create parallels in values and temperament to demonstrate the leadership traits the applicant acquired from his father. 

By citing one deadline-driven milestone, the applicant’s leadership style is broken down for the reviewer. 

Unlike the process driven culture of the technology industry, the applicant chose to emulate his father’s style of leading through chaos with meticulous planning and picking each other up after a fall.

The second half of the essay narrates the applicant and his friend’s initiative to feed thousands of children affected by the war in the middle east. To transition into the second half, I have strategically included how connecting with the right advisor helped them recruit volunteers.

Starting at 5:00 am and, planning for the day became a habit for my father as he managed many moving parts – suppliers, finance, staff, and sales. Learning all the functions of a business trained me to think from another person’s point of view. While working for my first leadership role in developing a $30 million technology product, I worked with a team of differing temperaments, skills, and motivations. The leadership revealed that the cash flow for the next two years is guaranteed if we get the product right.
