In this example, we look at an engineer, who has worked in a transformative phase of the automotive industry and realized that the change in expectations of customers, who are exposed to Tesla’s software updates schedules and iterative improvements, would soon lead the incumbents out of business if they don’t redesign the supply chain.

In the current role as an Automobile Engineer, he has a wide-ranging experience in evaluating project requirements, finding the feasibility of implementing a feature, prototyping the new components, testing the design and components in multiple conditions, and negotiating with suppliers for the optimum design-price ratio. The technical, interpersonal, negotiation, and cross-functional communication skills all came in handy for his success to date. But for the disruption happening in the automotive industry where connectedness, electric, autonomous, and iterative software updates become an integral part of the product, a multi-functional exposure to all the building blocks of management is essential for him to transition from an Engineer to a Product Management role.

From driving a stick shift as a teenager to a hybrid and now to an autonomous electric car, I had the good fortune to experience the evolution of the automotive industry as a customer. When I joined the industry five years back, Tesla was barely making ends meet. As an Engineer of an incumbent manufacturer, we observed Musk’s maneuvers as an overreaction to the call for ‘fully electric cars.’ In Q4 2015, we learned that what emerged as a niche preference among Entrepreneurs, was slowly capturing the imagination of customers across all demographics. Evidence of climate change was spreading across the consciousness of the world population.  The weeks following the Volkswagen emission scandal, I was working on a feedback session with customers who bought <model_name>.

Although we never used any cover-up in our emission tests, one of the customers in the session asked us ‘whether we were hiding any software.’ That statement upset me.

The hard work that we put in to manage the end to end experience – from defining customer persona to translating their needs to features and obsessively building safety scenarios for all failures, felt meaningless. On ..
