In this example, the applicant, who has an excellent track record with the client team, received an unusual feedback from his Manager during job appraisal – “actively seek feedback.” On enquiring, the Manager reiterated the importance of pro-actively seeking individual criticism from the Japanese client whose culture encourages one on one communication outside team meetings.

Not used to the process, the applicant hesitantly seeks out criticism and receives a vital feedback on his code. Recognizing the long-term impact of the methodology he adopted in the code framework, the applicant begins a 2-day rework that quickly solves the issue.

Starting my career working with an international team from the US, Japan, and India, was a big learning curve. Since the client was Japanese, I made it a point to communicate regularly with the team in Japan on the product roadmap. During the first job appraisal, I received feedback from my Manager to ‘actively seek feedback.’ I was assuming that my product code was received exceedingly well by the client team. The Manager shared that although the quality guidelines passed, the Japanese culture expects one on one communication outside the team meetings.
