GFOA Scholarships – MBA and Master’s (American and Canadian Applicants)

The Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA), formed in 1906, is an organization that represents public finance executives in the United States and Canada.

GFOA provides a variety of funding opportunities to students who want to work in state/provincial or municipal government finance after their graduation.
GFOA presently provides five distinct types of scholarships, each tailored to specific aspects of government finance:

Amount: $5,000 to $25,000

Number of Awards: 11 scholarships each year

1) Public Finance Scholarship - Goldberg-Miller Public Finance Scholarship

Amount: $25,000
Number of Awards: 1
Post-Graduation Goal: Career in state and local government finance

2) Accounting Studies - Frank L. Greathouse Government Accounting Scholarship

Amount: $10,000
Number of Awards: 2
Post-Graduation Goal: Career in State and local government

3) Minority Students - Minorities in Government Finance Scholarship

Amount: $10,000
Number of Awards: 1
Post-Graduation Goal: Career in State and local government Finance

4)  Part-Time Students - Government Finance Professional Development Scholarship

Amount: $10,000
Number of Awards: 4
Post-Graduation Goal: Career in State and local government Finance

5) Jeffrey L. Esser Career Development Scholarship

Amount: $5,000 to $15,000
Number of Awards: 1-3
Employment Criteria – At least 3 years with state or local government
Post-Graduation Goal: Career in State and local government Finance

Eligibility

To be eligible for GFOA scholarships, applicants must meet the following conditions:
•    Be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States or Canada
•    Career in state/provincial or local government finance
•    Not previously received a GFOA scholarship

Criteria

Varies for the 5 scholarships but broadly include:
•    Career in state/provincial and local government finance.
•    Relevant work experience.
•    Academic Strength  
•    Letters of recommendation
