Stanford MBA Social IMPACT Fellowship: MBA Phase vs. Post-MBA Phase

The fellowships at Stanford for social IMPACT candidates are divided into two phases - MBA and post-MBA.

1.    MBA Phase
2.   Post-MBA Phase

1.    MBA Phase (Fellowship)

For the MBA phase, the summer internship is the primary vehicle through which students gain in-depth functional and industry knowledge.

The challenge for social IMPACT candidates is remuneration. Most of the clients are non-profits that cannot afford to pay internship salaries.

Stanford offers MBA summer fellowships to manage the pay gap.

The MBA Summer fellowship fund is allocated through two channels – the Social Management immersion fund and the IMPACT Design Immersion Fellowship.

Social Management Immersion Fund (SMIF)

SMIF funds 8-to-10-week engagement on projects that tackle social and/or environmental issues. Since its founding, SMIF has funded 800 fellows spread across 400 organizations from non-profits, government agencies, and for-profit businesses with social impact goals.

IMPACT Design Immersion Fellowship (IDIF)

IDIF, is an 8-week program that offers support and guidance for the fellows to develop innovative solutions that have long-term or intergenerational IMPACT.

Previous winners of IMPACT Design Immersion Fellowship were working on:
•    Affordable insurance
•    Fintech for low-income families
•    Learning for the aged population
•    Elderly care through technology
•    Mental health for low-income families
•    Patient-focused healthcare delivery for chronic kidney disease patients
•    Developing energy-efficient heat pumps
•    Increasing diversity in the Finance industry.

Post-MBA Phase  (Fellowship)

MBA graduates pursuing careers in social or environmental impact after graduation primarily have two options:

Stanford Impact Leader Prizes (SIL)

The $20,000 SIL prize is open to 1 to 5 second-year MBA and MSx students who must prove their employment in an organization pursuing social or environmental goals on graduation.

Stanford Impact Founder Fellowships and Prizes

One $110,000 fund is awarded to candidates with strong leadership potential to start a for-profit or non-profit venture in addressing a relevant social or environmental cause. All finalists are also eligible to earn the $20,000 SIL awards.
