Entry Requirements for Deferred MBA/Early Admissions

Deferred MBA/Early Admissions applications share a similar characteristic in most Business Schools.

One such common characteristic is academic credentials. 

A strong GPA in the range of 3.5 to 4.0 is recommended, with the following application elements mandatory for acceptance:

• GMAT/GRE
• Resume
• Essays/Video essays
• English Language Proficiency Certificate (applicable to schools that entertain international applications)
• Academic/Professional references (some schools only accept professional references – internship/non-profit/community engagements)
• References/Recommendation Letters (ranges between 1 and 3 confirming the applicant’s leadership potential)

Qualities MBA Admissions Committee measure

The Admissions Committee is looking for unique candidates who can plan and follow through with their long-term goals. 

If the applicants can demonstrate a track record of achieving the milestones necessary to reach the ambitious long-term goal, they are already in contention.

A clearly articulated short and long-term career goal with alternative plans is the first thing the admissions committee assesses. 

The narrative should reflect a commitment to the goals.

Leadership is a standout quality in deferred MBA applications. 

The narrative should include elements of risk-taking, context on the leadership challenges, improvisations, and examples of persistence that have not been written to death.

Candidates should also demonstrate their commitment to an industry, social, or environmental cause. 

The essay should clearly articulate a motivation to alter the future. 

The specifics should match with the projects and milestones that the applicants have already accomplished during college.

2. NYU x NYU / Stern

Short Answer: (150 word maximum, double-spaced, 12-point font) What are your career goals following your undergraduate degree?

Essay 1: Change _____ it: (350 word maximum, double-spaced, 12-point font) In today’s global business environment, the only constant is change. Using NYU Stern’s brand call to action, we want to know how you view change. Change: _____ it. Fill in the blank with a word of your choice. Why does this word resonate with you? Essay 2: Personal Expression (a.k.a. "Pick Six") Describe yourself to the Admissions Committee and to your future classmates using six images and corresponding captions. Your uploaded PDF should contain the following elements: a brief introduction or overview of your "Pick Six" (no more than three sentences), six images that help illustrate who you are, a one-sentence caption for each of the six images that helps explain why they were selected and are significant to you.

7. MIT Early Admissions

Cover Letter: MIT Sloan seeks students whose personal characteristics demonstrate that they will make the most of the incredible opportunities at MIT, both academic and non-academic. Videos should adhere to the following guidelines: No more than 1 minute (60 seconds) in length

Video Question 2:  All MBA Early applicants will be prompted to respond to a randomly generated, open-ended question.

Applicants are given 10 seconds to prepare a 60-second response.

8. Columbia DEP (Deferred Enrollment Program)

Applicants must complete one short answer question and two essays. 

Short answer question: What are your professional plans after you complete your undergraduate or current master's degree? (50 characters maximum)

Essay question 1: Applying to a deferred enrollment program suggests that your aspirations in the next 2-5 years will include an MBA. Why do you feel you need an MBA to achieve your long-term career goals and why would you like to pursue your MBA at Columbia Business School? (300 words)

Essay question 2: Contributing to the community is an important part of the CBS experience. Discuss one experience or situation in your undergraduate or graduate career where you feel you contributed to your community and what you learned from the experience. (250 words)

9. Kellogg Future Leaders 

Essay 1: Intentionality is a key aspect of what makes our graduates successful Kellogg leaders. Help us understand your journey by articulating your motivations for pursuing an MBA, the specific goals you aim to achieve, and why you believe a deferred enrollment program is the right fit for you. Moreover, share why you feel Kellogg is best suited to serve as a catalyst for your career aspirations and what you will contribute to our community of lifelong learners during your time here. (450 words)

Essay 2: Kellogg leaders are primed to tackle challenges everywhere, from the boardroom to their neighborhoods. Describe a specific professional or extracurricular experience where you had to make a difficult decision. Reflecting on this experience, identify the values that guided your decision-making process and how it impacted your leadership style. (450 words)

10. Darden Future Year Scholars Program

Essay 1: What would you want your classmates to know about you that is not on your resume? (100 words)

Essay 2: Please describe a tangible example that illuminates your experience promoting an inclusive environment and what you would bring to creating a welcoming, global community at Darden. (300 words)

Essay 3: At this time, how would you describe your short-term, post-graduate goals in terms of industry, function, geography, company size and/or mission, and how does it align with the long-term vision you have for your career? (200 words)

11. Yale Silver Scholars Program

Essay 1: Describe the biggest commitment you have ever made. Why is this commitment meaningful to you and what actions have you taken to support it?

Essay 2: Describe the community that has been most meaningful to you. What is the most valuable thing you have gained from being a part of this community and what is the most important thing you have contributed to this community?

Essay 3: Describe the most significant challenge you have faced. How have you confronted this challenge and how has it shaped you as a person?

12. Jones Rice MBA Deferred Enrollment 

Required Short Answer Responses: (100-word limit, each)

Q) Rice Business seeks to have a clear understanding of your career goals upon the completion of your MBA experience.

   Response #1: "In 100 words or less, please share your short-term career goals."
   Response #2: "In 100 words or less, please share your long-term career goals."

Required Creative Essay:

Essay Option One – Georgetown Community

As the oldest Jesuit institution in the United States, Cura Personalis is a Latin phrase deeply ingrained within our community and translates to “care of the person.” It encompasses a profound sense of care and responsibility for one another, rooted in personalized attention to each individual’s needs, unique circumstances, gifts, and limitations, fostering the growth of each person. Please reflect on a specific instance where you exemplified cura personalis by supporting a teammate or coworker. Describe the particular actions you took to guide them, and explain the impact of these efforts. Additionally, discuss how you would leverage these experiences to contribute to the collaborative environment at Georgetown McDonough.

Essay Option Three – Achieving Excellence

Please reflect on a professional experience from your resume where you achieved outstanding results. Describe why this experience exemplified excellence, highlight the strengths or skills you utilized that contributed to this achievement, and share how these qualities will help you leave a legacy at Georgetown.

Video Essay

We believe a vibrant community is built on diverse and unique individuals, and we want you to bring your whole self to Georgetown McDonough. We’ve learned about your professional and leadership qualities throughout the application, but now we want to know more about you beyond work. Whether it’s a new hobby, a fun adventure, or a simple pleasure, in one minute, share what has recently brought you joy outside of work.

MAAP Essays (Deferred)

Do you have a current employment offer for post-graduation? What type of industries/ functions are you pursuing? Where are you in the employment search process? (250 words or fewer)

How do you plan to develop as a leader both personally and professionally during your deferment period? (150 words or less)

14. Tepper Future Business Leaders 

Short answer question (150 words): What are your post-undergraduate career plans? What company are you joining? What will be your role?

Essay question (350-500 words): The Future Business Leaders program offers you time to grow before entering business school. Describe the concrete steps you plan to take professionally, academically, and personally to maximize your readiness for the MBA experience.
 

Deferred MBA/Early Admissions – Who Should Apply?

The world's best MBA programs require applicants to have at least 2-5 years of full-time professional experience before they apply. 

Since peer-to-peer learning is integral to the ‘MBA’ experience, work experience in diverse industries, functions, roles, and geographies became the differentiating factor. 

A few exceptional candidates with less than 2-years of experience make it through, but the chance for an applicant with no experience is close to zero for a top MBA program. 

Despite the trend, applicants with demonstrable leadership skills began approaching top schools. 

Business Schools recognizing that they are missing out on a niche talent pool, found a compromise – Deferred or Early MBA Admissions.

Four demographics continue to find the Early MBA Admissions attractive. 

1. Diligent Planner 

Considered to be a rare group, these applicants tend to be children of Business School alumni who had received orientation towards an MBA program from an early age. 

For such diligent planners, a guarantee of an MBA reduces the burden of balancing work responsibilities and MBA application. 

Studies on GMAT score decreasing with age is another factor that encourages them to take advantage of the momentum.

2. Strong Academic Candidates 

For top schools, a GPA of 3.5+ and a GMAT of 730+ is an implicit requirement. One factor that jeopardizes the chance for the academically strong candidate is the competition from high-performing applicants with average academics. 

By leveraging their academic achievements, this application pool can stand out before gaining any experience. 

The quality of the experience is not a factor for the Deferred MBA program if the basic requirements of a full-time work experience are met. 

That is not the case for a highly competitive full-time MBA program.

3. Entrepreneurial Applicant 

For entrepreneurial applicants, admission to a top MBA program is insurance against the risk they are about to take. 

The full-time work experience in a startup the applicant founded is relevant and, if it fails, the person has an opportunity to pivot back into a traditional career. 

A surprisingly large percentage of entrepreneurial applicants leverage this strategy and choose to continue in their startup over joining the MBA program.

4. Master’s candidate 

For a master’s candidate with no experience, early admission to a top MBA program is insurance against their specialty going out of fashion in the next 3-5 years. 

The Biotech and Data Science boom that commoditized the specialty is one such example. 

With an MBA, the applicant has a clear pivot point after 3 years to transition into General Management, Consulting, Marketing, or any non-technical Management function if their specialty is saturated in the market.
