Darden MBA Essay: Share a time when you advocated for a perspective, identity, or community different from your own. How did this experience impact your worldview?

In this fictitious narrative, the applicant cites his experience in serving the flood-affected town of X. Meeting a child who lost both her parents is a pivotal moment of confrontation that forced him to advocate for a belief that gave the child relief from the sudden sorrow that engulfed her life.

The second half of the essay is a reflection on ‘seeing the good’ in groups/people with a completely different belief system. By advocating for a different perspective than his own, the non-profit and the applicant could find a reliable support network in the town to carry out the relief effort.

A child who lost both her parents remarked stoically, “there is no God, isn’t it.” As an atheist, this was a moment for me to shine. I couldn’t as I saw three photos of “Jesus” pasted on her cracked walls. She looked at me for validation, and I shared,
