Chicago Booth MBA Essay 1# How will the Booth MBA help you achieve your immediate and long-term post-MBA career goals? (250-word minimum)
Profile: Mr. V
Profile (Background): Mr. V, the creator of a tracker for conserving marine life, now seeks a holistic learning experience to bring multiple stakeholders from 100+ countries to his conservation efforts.
Essay Approach: “Why Chicago Booth MBA?”
Mr. V should explain how Chicago Booth offers the foundational leadership skills to recognize non-market forces and the strategies to influence stakeholders. He should emphasize the need to find the right collaborators from science background at Chicago Booth to implement his vision of bringing scientific and policy intervention to conserve marine life.
Essay Planning
Problem: The lack of dedicated private funds for maintaining marine biodiversity
Problem (Explained): Cleantech funds are dedicated to building technology for renewable energy. With ESG funds receiving lower interest because of a long-term return horizon, Mr. V wants to champion the urgency of preserving marine life.
Feasible Goals: Finding passionate investors at Chicago Booth interested in marine life.
Short-term Goal: Transition into a Product Manager role at a non-profit working to track conservation efforts in Marine Life
Long-Term Goal: Build a consulting venture that would mitigate the impact of climate change on marine life and help conserve ocean biodiversity.
Chicago Booth’s Strength: Mr V. could build support for this cause in an environment like Chicago Booth, where a diverse worldview is encouraged. By partnering with science majors through The Lab to Launch, gaining a network from the Booth Private Equity / Venture Capital Lab to fund the solutions, and learning strategic management, Mr V. will receive a holistic education for his ambitious goal.
Opener: Starting with a conservation story while also sharing Mr. V’s technical skills is the goal behind the opening line.
Strategy: Educating the reader about the difference between investments in green technology vs. investing in conservation is the secondary goal behind the essay. I had to be careful not to state all the facts in one paragraph but spread them out throughout the essay, while keeping the focus on the applicant.
Again, like in any essay where the cause is bigger than the applicant, I had to bring back the focus of the essay to the cause in each paragraph.
