Sample Wharton Professional Gains Essay (Impact Investing)

For the fifth Sample essay, we look at a Fictitious profile – a candidate who was a consultant for UNICEF projects in Kenya. The dip in return on investment for a farming project is the background that informs the admission team on the challenges in understanding the roadblocks. Through a curious approach, the applicant unearths the importance of women in improving productivity in farms. With data to support the strategic investment in women farmers – through training and tools, the applicant felt disheartened when his proposal remained in the shelf instead of reaching the decision makers.

Reiterating his belief that real change cannot be achieved in a slow bureaucratic government organization, the applicant cites Wharton MBA as the next step in transitioning into a private IMPACT investment firm.

By highlighting Wharton’s pioneering work in IMPACT investing and the MBA-specific mentorship through MIINT, student clubs, and courses, the applicant hopes to build the foundational skills to take on the challenges of balancing social impact with profitability.

Our investment thesis at UNICEF Kenya hit the first roadblock when the Farmer’s productivity began to drop drastically. The drought of 2017-18 was the primary culprit, and our relief efforts were targeted to raise funds for the new challenge. As a person of color raised by my mother and grandmother, I recognize the power of women to transform the family’s foundation. The 3-month long independent study that I initiated was outside the purview of a typical IMPACT investment analysis. The findings revealed that when women were involved, yields increased by 20%. Since the household’s primary responsibility to manage the water supply rested on the shoulders of a woman, she found innovative farming practices that cut the cost and increased the utilization.
