Berkeley Haas MBA Goals Essay Example: Technology to Consulting

Haas MBA Career Goals Essay: What are your short-term and long-term career goals, and how will an MBA from Haas help you achieve those goals? (3-5 years short; a decade or more long-term goals) (300 words max)

Commentary from the Author on improving the believability of the goals essay for Berkeley Haas MBA, especially for applicants switching industries. In this case from Technology to Strategy Consulting. The Author also comments on the care that is required when you quote courses for long-term career goals if it is in Entrepreneurship.

Problem: Evaluating the current experience of the applicant in Consulting, outside Technology

Problem (Explained): For this Sample MBA Essay, we had to consider the applicant’s level of experience in consulting outside Technology Consulting, before suggesting the right Haas MBA curriculum and learning experiences.

Feasible Goals: Technology Consulting to Strategy Consulting is a valid goal. However, if you look at the latest Employment Trends in T20 MBA programs, pure strategy roles are non-existent across schools. Haas has a strong General Management placement trend and also a strong Consulting record.

Short-term Goal: Strategy Consulting

Long-Term Goal: Streamline the commercialization of clean energy technology.

Long-Term Goal (Value from Berkeley Haas): Haas’ CleanTech to Market (C2M) is the ideal platform to engage startups and cleantech professionals about the need for standardizing the procurement, distribution, and delivery of renewable energy solutions.

Admission Consultant’s Note: While Strategy Consulting is feasible in large Consulting firms, the goal should not be framed just by looking at the percentage of the latest Haas MBA class in the function. You should also evaluate the industry.

Haas has a strong legacy of facilitating clean energy due to the region’s leadership in sustainability and adopting cleantech.

Recent trends in the Energy industry placements at Haas is also encouraging

Experience (Applicant): In modern Technology Consulting, the first phase of the Consulting engagement is gaining subject matter expertise. But since this period is limited to 1-2 weeks and only to implement a technology solution, the exposure is not sufficient to quote it as a validation to pursue a Strategy Consulting role post-MBA, even with a  Haas MBA.

Extra-Curricular (Applicant): Fortunately, the applicant has  a continuous and strong experience facilitating cleantech projects in Africa through a consulting engagement in a non-profit. The experience is in contributing towards building proposals for a large cleantech project in rural Africa.

Knowledge Gap: Finance, Accounting, Organizational Management, Business Model Innovation

Electives: We have shortlisted electives according to the knowledge gap (see F1GMAT’s Haas MBA Essay Guide for the Complete Sample and set of electives we have quoted)

Opener: I wanted to summarize the applicant’s greatest achievement in a single line as the opener of the goals Essay.

Strategy: The strategy is to organically transition from the greatest achievement to an interaction with a Haas Alum. This is a cliché now – interacting with an Alum and citing them in MBA Goals Essays. But if you have worked with Haas MBA Alum and your interaction felt meaningful, use parts of the conversation or your observation about the person as a reflection of Haas culture.

I have used the mapping of the Alum with Haas’ culture.
