NYU Stern MBA Curriculum Analysis: Structure

The Stern MBA is a two-year program that begins with LAUNCH, an immersive orientation experience encouraging students to see business as a tool for societal impact and value creation.

•    Year One focuses on the Core Curriculum, covering essential disciplines such as finance, strategy, marketing, and leadership. Students complete a mix of required and elective core courses and apply their learning during the summer internship, a key component of the professional development journey.

•    Year Two offers complete flexibility through electives, global study programs, and Stern Solutions projects, which connect students to real business challenges. Students also complete a capstone course in Professional Responsibility or Ethical and Legal Challenges of the Modern Corporation, reinforcing Stern’s emphasis on integrity and impact.

NYU Stern MBA Curriculum Analysis: Cores & Electives

The Core Curriculum builds a strong analytical and managerial foundation through nine courses, four required and five chosen from a menu that includes areas like Data Science, Marketing, Operations, and Strategy.

Specializations

Once the core is complete, students personalize their learning by choosing from over 600 electives and up to three specializations from 27 specializations.

Stern’s electives bridge traditional disciplines with emerging areas such as FinTech, Business Analytics, Sustainability, and AI, reflecting the school’s interdisciplinary focus. This allows students to dive deep into sectors like finance, technology, media, or entrepreneurship while developing the quantitative, strategic, and ethical skills needed to lead in today’s evolving industries.

NYU Stern MBA Curriculum Analysis: Experiential Learning Opportunities

At Stern, experiential learning is not an optional add-on; it’s embedded within the academic structure. The program offers multiple pathways for students to gain hands-on exposure across different industries.

Startup Orientation

Courses like Tech and the City immerse students in the fast-paced world of startups, giving them the chance to collaborate directly with entrepreneurs and venture capitalists to solve live business problems.

Consulting Orientation

Similarly, the Consulting Lab: Branding + Innovation replicates the structure of a professional consulting engagement, allowing students to tackle strategic branding challenges for real-world corporate partners.

Leadership Development

For those seeking leadership and governance experience, the Golub Capital Board Fellows Program provides a rare opportunity to serve as non-voting board members for New York City-based non-profits. This allows MBA candidates to understand boardroom dynamics, governance processes, and the strategic decision-making frameworks that drive social impact organizations.

IMPACT Fund

The NYU Impact Investment Fund (NIIF) reflects Stern’s growing focus on socially responsible finance. Operating jointly with NYU’s Wagner and Law schools, it gives students direct exposure to impact investing, from sourcing social enterprises to performing due diligence and making investment recommendations. This platform helps students understand how capital can be used to drive both financial returns and measurable social outcomes.

NYU Stern MBA Curriculum Analysis: Global Learning Opportunities

Global education is another integral dimension of the NYU Stern MBA. The school offers a variety of international programs designed to expose students to the realities of global business, cross-cultural management, and international markets.

All programs are organized by the Global Education team and are available to eligible students across the Full-Time MBA.

Doing Business In... (DBi) – Global Intelligence

The flagship offering, Doing Business In... (DBi), provides short, intensive courses in international markets ranging from Asia and Europe to Africa and Latin America. Students spend one to two weeks abroad, learning from local faculty, visiting companies, and engaging in cultural experiences that deepen their understanding of global business environments.

Industry-Specific International Visits

Stern also offers Faculty-Led Travel Courses, which differ from DBi programs by integrating travel directly into academic coursework. These courses, designed and taught by Stern professors, explore industries and economies through a specialized lens, such as real estate, film, or logistics, and include fieldwork in relevant international destinations.

International Exchange – Semester Abroad

For longer-term immersion, the Semester Exchange Program allows Full-Time MBA students to study for a term at one of Stern’s 30+ partner schools worldwide. These exchanges broaden students’ perspectives and enable them to develop a truly global network of peers and faculty. For those seeking shorter commitments, Summer Programs provide condensed international study opportunities over the break, maintaining academic flexibility without requiring a full semester abroad.
