6) MBA Job Sector

Kellogg MBA is known for Marketing specialisation but the latest Post-MBA employment trends shows that Consulting is the most popular industry with the acceptance rate of job offers in this industry in 2011 remaining at 37%, a trend that saw a steady rise from 2007 onwards with a small dip in 2010.

Industry                    Job Offer Acceptance Rate

                                  2011   2010   2009   2008   2007
Consulting                   37        31       38        33       31

On the other hand, Ross MBA is known for the General Management program. Like Kellogg MBA program, Ross MBA Students also preferred Consulting over other industries with 27.6% choosing it over the second popular High-tech/Telecom Services industry, which represented 11% of the class.

Ross MBA program has also seen a growth in job acceptance rate in consulting industry

Industry                    Job Offer Acceptance Rate (% of Class)

                                  2011   2010   2009
Consulting                   27.6    26.2    24.8

7) MBA Job Function

Kellogg MBA is known for its marketing focus.  Let us look at the top 3 job functions and the acceptance rate trends these areas over the past 5 year.

Function                                               Job Offer Acceptance Rate (% of Class)

                                                               2011     2010     2009   2008    2007
Consulting                                                 40          34          41      34       33
Marketing                                                  19          25          20       21       22
Finance                                                     18          17          15       24       22

As you can see above, Kellogg is slowly losing the tag for the marketing focus with the % choosing Consulting increasing for the past 5 years and those accepting marketing decreasing steadily.

On the other hand Ross had equal demand for Consulting and marketing with the Consulting acceptance rate overtaking Marketing by just 3 decimal points. Finance is at a close third.

Function          Job Offer Acceptance Rate ( % of Class)

                                     2011
Consulting                     27.5%
Marketing                      27.2%
Finance                         22.5%

8) Salary

One reason why Consulting is slowly taking over the reins is because of the lucrative base salary, bonuses and extra perks. The Ross MBA employment report shows that the median base salary for Consulting is $125000, $27000 more than Marketing and $25000 more than Finance.

                Median          Mean                   Range               Signing        Other
                                                                                       Bonus       Guaranteed
                                                                                                      Compensation
Consulting $125,000     $121,088    $65,000-$135,000       $20,000        $25,000
Marketing  $98,000       $100,040    $60,000-$125,000       $20,000        $10,000
Finance     $100,000      $99,128      $55,000-$136,000      $40,000        $20,000

Kellogg MBA Employment report also shows a similar trend

                           Median          Mean                Range

       Consulting   $125,000      $124,120        $45,500 – $172,000
       Marketing    $98,000       $100,929         $40,000–145,000
       Finance       $100,000    $102,571          $60,000–140,000

As far as the compensation is concerned both Kellogg and Ross has a similar base salary in the top three functions.  When you consider the lower range in the salary, Ross has a slight advantage.

9) Alumni Network

Kellogg Alumni network has a size of over 52000, with over 60 active regional alumni clubs. Ross on the other hand has size of over 40,000 with 54 regional clubs.  Although Kellogg has a size advantage, both schools are known for excellent alumni response. Students can join the alumni network and search for jobs by region, industry and function.

10) Exchange Programs

With the International Exchange Program at Ross School of Business, students get the chance to spend semester-long study abroad programs with partner schools around the world. 2012 Partner schools offering electives include AGSM, CBS, ESADE, HKUST, IESE    , ISB, LBS, LSE, RSM, St. Gallen, CEIBS, NTU and UADE.

Kellogg students on the other hand has a much wider array of partner schools to choose during the second year fall or winter study abroad program. They include AGSM, CEIBS, CUHK, CBS, COPPEAD, Ecole Superieure des Sciences Economiques et Commerciales, ESADE, FGV, Guanghua School of Management, Peking University, HEC-ISA, Hitotsubashi, HKUST, IE, IESE, INCAE, ISB, INSEAD, IPADE, Keio University Graduate School of Business Administration, LBS, London School of Economics, MBS, Nanyang, NUS, Otto Beisheim School of Management, Pontifica Universidad Catolica de Chile, Recanati, RSM, Sasin, SDA Bocconi, Tsinghua University, Universidad de San Andres, University of Cape Town Graduate School of Business, University of Edinburgh Business School, St.Gallen and Yonsei University.

Conclusion

Kellogg beats Ross in most of the rankings and in brand reach, but when you analyse the post-MBA Salary, there is very little to choose from both the programs.  Kellogg has a more comprehensive exchange program. Both the schools offer opportunities for Experiential learning.
