2020 Financial Times Global MBA Ranking - Detailed Analysis

Whether it was the 2015 audit year or the rising prominence of entrepreneurship or close to 30% not seeking immediate employment in the latest Stanford MBA class, Financial Times Global MBA ranking 2020 has finally found a new winner in Harvard Business School, closely followed by Wharton – ending Stanford’s consecutive year reign on the top charts.

Surprises

HEC Paris’s entry into the top 10 rankings in 2020, after the 19th and 21st position in the previous two years, has been the biggest surprise. The post-MBA salary of the school is comparable to schools in the 19th to 25th ranking. Other diverse ranking factors (contributing towards 60% of the overall ranking) that FT considered had a cumulative effect on the school’s performance, especially international mobility (forced or otherwise), and value for money.

Salary Ranking

If salary is the only criteria, despite the 2015 audit year against Harvard’s 2018, Stanford leads Harvard by over $17,000 at $225,589. Wharton and Columbia rank at 3rd and 4th – all crossing the psychological barrier of $200,000. Booth and MIT Sloan position itself in the $190,000 range.

Value for Money

Even luxury purchasers are looking for deals and opportunities to broadcast their status before latching onto any price point. However, top MBA applicants seem not to worry about the short-term debt as the 3-5 year ROI plays well into the career switchers’ plan to solidify their position in a new  job function. None of the top 20 schools rank for value for money, except for HEC Paris, Insead, and Cambridge Judge.

Research Rank

The quality of the content in a curriculum could be judged by the quality of the research work the university produces. The top 20 MBA programs didn’t disappoint, as Harvard, Wharton, Columbia, MIT Sloan, Booth, Stanford, and Duke Fuqua maintained their top slot.
