Wharton Professional Gains Essay (Digital Marketing to Strategy)

For the fourth Sample essay, we look at a Fictitious profile – a candidate with 4+ years of experience working as a Business Development Manager for a Digital agency.

As the agency that forged a strategic partnership with local businesses, the start-up gained global coverage for its innovative credit-based marketing plan. The strategic partnership model caught the attention of <x_search_engine_giant>, and in 2018, they acquired the company.


Starting as the 5th person in the start-up, the applicant now was leading the integration of <x_search_engine_giant>’s online marketing tools for small businesses. By acting as a consultant for diverse small businesses in niche industries, he learned to intercept customer motivations and convert them to keywords.

Although fascinated by the nuanced differences in customer preferences, the applicant felt pigeonholed as a digital marketing specialist when his true interest lay in Strategy.

Working in the initial years when <x_search_engine_giant> were seeking opportunities to interact with local businesses in India, our digital agency became the conduit through which partnerships were built. As the 5th person in the team, I led the establishment of partnerships with start-ups in the Travel, Entertainment, and Retail industries by offering an innovative credit-based budgeting plan. With the plan, start-ups can initiate the marketing campaign at no cost. A unique conversion tracking platform that our in-house team developed accelerated the conversion. As the start-ups earned new customers, the budgets were allocated as a proportion of the revenue. The unique model helped us scale the startups and earn loyal partners. The legends of our approach reached the <x_search-engine_giant>’s office in California, and we were acquired in 2018.
