Dual MBA Degree for Social Entrepreneurship: Carroll-Tuft

Students who wish to graduate in Social Entrepreneurship now have a new option – A Dual Degree from the Boston College’s (BC) Carroll School of Management and Tuft University’s Department of Urban and Environmental Policy and Planning (UEP).

While each degree on its own takes 2 years or 4 years in total, the Dual Degree takes just 3 years to complete. By the end of the program, students will have a Master of Arts degree from UEP, and a Master of Business Administration from the Carroll School of Management.

The program teaches environmental planning and policy with business management principles, giving Dual Degree graduates an in depth perspective of both fields. Students can then choose a career in either of the fields, or ideally, use their cross-disciplinary education to forge a career that touches both areas. Social Entrepreneurship and Public Policy formulation & analysis, are two fast developing areas with immense potential. In fact, a major motivation for this program is the increasing interest in the field of social entrepreneurship.

The tentative schedule involves 2 years at Tuft’s to earn the MA from UEP, followed by one year at Carroll School for the MBA degree. The program was on the anvil for the last 2 years. Given UEP’s environmental science and sustainability courses with the Carroll School’s business, marketing and project management courses together create a niche new program in a rapidly growing field. Initially just 1 or 2 students are expected to take this program, with numbers gradually increasing to around 12.

This new venture comes on the heels of a successful Dual Degree program between Tufts University and Boston College in the past ? J.D./M.A. in Urban and Environmental Policy and Planning with UEP and the BC Law School. This was introduced in 2010 for graduate careers in law and environmental science.

Both BC and UEP already feature a variety of Dual / Joint Degrees.

BC has J.D./M.B.A. Program, J.D./M.S.W. Program, J.D./M.Ed. or M.A. in Education , J.D./M.A. or J.D./Ph.D. Philosophy Program and J.D./M.A. in Urban & Environmental Policy and Planning.

Tufts features UEP/Biology Joint Degree, UEP/Economics Joint Degree, UEP/Eliot-Pearson Department of Child Development Joint Degree, UEP/Civil & Environmental Engineering Joint Degree, UEP/Fletcher School Dual Degree and UEP/The Gerald J. & Dorothy R. Friedman School of Nutrition Science & Policy.
