NLP practitioners will spam your twitter account with ‘secret’ tips to influence people. Basically, what they are hinting are methods of persuasion using repetition both subliminally, and consciously. The tips might seem non-replicable in MBA Application essays, but a combination of face-to-face meeting, and consistency of writing style can influence the AdCom members.
Go for Campus Visits
Meeting MBA Admissions team and experiencing live class during a campus visit can be mentioned as experiences that influenced your choice of the target school over others. More than the rigor of the research, you might even get a chance to meet the AdCom members.
Go for MBA Tours
MBA Tours gives you the chance to interact with the school’s marketing team. Starting from the Associate to even in some events – the marketing lead, the story of positive interactions can casually spread in the MBA team during coffee breaks.
During Campus Visits and MBA Tours, the strategy to influence Admission Committee directly can backfire but the effort to stand out during the event as a person who has the leadership presence, courtesy, and initiative to help others will stay in the memory of the MBA team.
You might think that such negligible positive attributes might go unnoticed, but a study by Bornstein, Leone & Galley, 1987, shows that participants prefer subliminally presented subjects (shapes and faces) to unknown subjects. Your job is creating an association between your name and your physically identifiable attributes – height, accent, or your unique background (job, education, or family).
Repeat your Identity
After you have created an association, the AdCom’s memory should be refreshed with the attributes either through the resume, which most AdCom member reads before skimming the essays or in one of the narratives in the essay. The ease with which your profile can be recalled gives a pleasant feeling about the applicant. This conceptual fluency will give your candidacy a boost more than the unknown achiever who has not done the homework of interacting with the Business School team.
Maintain Consistent Writing Style
Interestingly, maintaining a consistent writing style – use of active verbs, paragraphs after every 3-5 lines, and ban on flowery phrases increases the ease of reading the essays. Just by easing the reading level of the essay, the AdCom will find your essay more favorable.
Consistency cannot be achieved if you outsource the writing job to a consultant who creates replicas of successful applications. AdCom is too smart to understand the replicated voices and phrases. Let your unique voice come across but focus on the sentence structure and make it simple. Our team takes extra effort to maintain your unique voice. Submit your essays for expert reviews.
