An MBA recommendation Letter for a technical consultant from a business owner/classmate.
Introduction about business
It was during the last week of July 2008, when we started Company X. With Company X, we wanted to bridge the gap between what the customers need and what is available for them on-the-shelf in the apparel retail industry in India. We implement custom design for apparels. Shortage of fund forced us to use information technology to leverage our business.
The Role of the applicant
AJ was a technical consultant with <a multinational company> and he had provided technical solutions to many businesses in banking, mobile and online retail space. He was my classmate . I trusted AJ as a person and as a technical expert in e-commerce. Since we had to set up an online store for our business, I requested him to be our technical advisor. He proved that he was more than a technical expert.
Break the technical consultant "typecast"
His approach towards business was fascinating. He never asked me about the IT solution that I need but spend time in understanding how the business worked. He is a fast learner and approaches business in its totality. One important questions that he asked me was about the need for an IT infrastructure. I told him that we were short of seed fund necessary to set up a store. The next question that he asked me was about the feasibility of the business and the motivation to start the business. One good thing about AJ is that he gives you complete attention when you are talking. This gave us the freedom to discuss openly about the vision that we had for our company.
Another crucial question that he asked us was about the market research that we did for Company X. I told him about the sample data that we had collected from people in the 18 to 25 age group. AJ recommended us to do another round of survey to find out whether potential customers would be ready for an online interaction. We conducted a second round of survey, which showed that the customers were not willing to fill out a detailed form to get a custom design. This was a revelation for us. We discussed these findings with AJ. He suggested a business process that was dependant on E-Mail and personal calls rather than an online form. This approach has helped us in creating a strong customer base before scaling up with a website for a broader market. This approach also helped us in focusing more on the coordination required to handle 5-10 client request per week.
More focus on applicant's business acumen
Initially, we were focusing on kids and women’s apparel. AJ put forward an interesting observation; he told us that customers who might experiment with new brands are men. He suggested that, in order to maintain a positive cash flow, we might have to broaden our market and include men’s apparel in our arsenal. His observation was true, as we received at least 60% of our orders through men’s apparel. This additional revenue helped us in meeting our raw material expense and in managing our inventory.
Conclusion
AJ’s passion and involvement had benefited us during one of the toughest period in our business. He never questioned the long hours that he had to put for us. His business acumen, listening skills and his approach towards challenges have made it a joy to work with him.
