1) Engineer and Finance-Friendly Cohort: MIT Sloan has a reputation for attracting analytically strong applicants. Engineers from the consulting and technology industry constitute more than a third of the class. Interestingly, candidates from the Finance industry are a close second.
2) Cost: When comparing the total cost with M7 schools, MIT is the cheapest of the 7, with the total cost reaching $220,000 in 2023. Also, MIT allows candidates to pay fees in monthly installments through a 10-month installment plan.
3) Fellowships: Every year, all candidates compete for 86 fellowships. These fellowships are awarded for academic excellence and professional achievements. Other popular scholarships based on nationality are for candidates from Norway, Spain, Britain, Brazil, and China, with an amount that covers the cost of the study and an additional stipend that covers the living expense.
4) Core Curriculum: MIT Sloan is a pioneer in introducing electives within the core courses itself. The mandatory courses cover unique themes like Leadership Challenges for an inclusive world and capture relevant courses for Managers and leaders to improve their communication and make decisions with data models and analysis. The electives in core cover broader themes in Operations, Strategy, and Accounting.
5) Certificates: MIT offers Certificate programs for all master-level students, including MBA for three specializations – Sustainability, healthcare, and Digital Product Management.
6) Tracks: The school has organized the post-MBA orientation through three tracks – Finance, Entrepreneurship and Innovation, and Enterprise Management tracks. This is Sloan’s way of helping candidates specialize through labs, electives, and experiential learning. If candidates want to focus on Consulting, Enterprise Management Track is for them. For entrepreneurship – starting up or working in a startup, the Entrepreneurship, and Innovation Track is for them. For anyone who wants to transition into Finance or build their leadership and subject-matter expertise, the Finance track is for them.
7) Labs: MIT has extensive experiential learning opportunities through labs that have a market focus, like focus on China, the US, and Israel. Also, the labs cover industries like Technology and Healthcare and functions in Analytics, operations, and sustainability.
8) Leadership Development: Perhaps the most interesting aspect of MIT Sloan is the focus on leadership development, with 20 electives around leadership covering broad contexts like Ethics, Creativity, Communication, building organizations, and refining interpersonal dynamics
9) Post-MBA Placements: Consulting was the most popular post-MBA industry and function at MIT Sloan. A distant second in terms of function was Finance, and a close third was Product Management, which made the bulk of the placements in the Technology industry.
10) MBA Application: Unlike other M7 schools, MIT Sloan doesn’t have a traditional essay. They use a cover letter, organizational chart, Video Statement, and one recommendation letter. But the school didn’t completely abandon short-answer or essay questions. There is an optional 250-word question that asks about how your worldview was developed and the influencing factors like family, culture, and community. I recommend that you answer the question.
