NYU Stern MBA Essay 2 Tips: Personal Expression

Essay 2:  Personal Expression
Please describe yourself to your MBA classmates. You may use almost any method to convey your message (e.g. words, illustrations). Feel free to be creative. If you submit a non-written piece for this essay (i.e., artwork or multimedia) or if you submit this essay via mail, please upload a brief description of your submission with your online application.

NYU Stern MBA Essay 2 (Tips): The resume covers your progress as a high achieving professional but the admission team values emotionally intelligent and impact-oriented Stern MBAs. The second question evaluates your personality from another dimension – creativity. How will you introduce yourself if you feel completely comfortable among your peers?

Remember, as a kid, how we used to introduce ourselves to classmates. Initially, it started with Name and Son/Daughter of Father/Mother’s Name, then it became Name and What you loved, then slowly it evolved to Name, and the courses you like and finally the boring Name and your area of expertise. Your job is one aspect of your personality. Your values, hobbies, and beliefs are much more interesting than you imagine, unless you hold some archaic worldview. What if you can combine all the elements of your personality – family, upbringing, what you love, the courses you love, and your professional accomplishments in one essay or as an illustration? That is what the admission team means when they ask you to be creative. No one wants to read poetry from someone who feels extremely uncomfortable even writing a single flowery phrase.

We have selected six diverse videos to give you some inspiration. All these applicants have made it to Stern MBA. While watching the videos you will understand that the bar is not that high when it comes to quality of scripting. You just have to present yourself interestingly.

Stern MBA Essay 2 Example 1: Travelogue

The Full-time MBA Student's experience as a travel enthusiast is a classic example on how to approach Essay 2. By making the travel photos as the basis for her presentation, she cleverly covers her diverse travel experiences including her heritage, food experiences, interest in travel/adventure, compassion for the underprivileged, and an open view about diverse cultures in this 5-minute video.

The quality of the script is standard, but the collection of photos and the fact that she had travelled to over 20 countries by the age of 23 is what might have impressed the admission team.

Stern MBA Personal Expression Essay Example

Notice how she ends with a positive affirmation that she would like to celebrate next year with Stern MBA classmates – an interesting way to show motivation to join Stern MBA.

Stern MBA Essay 2 Example 2: Artistry (Drawing)

The candidate illustrates his life through drawings starting with his wife and him, then he explains Riemann sphere to show his passion for Mathematics, demonstrate his passion for teaching for non-profit by drawing a classroom lecture session, and finally captures his dog and shares how he changed the puppy from a destructive to a loving companion.

NYU Stern Essay 2 Creativity

He captures creativity in the true sense, and we believe this video is the ideal example of what the Stern MBA Admission team is expecting from you – capture an aspect of your personality that has not been covered by the resume, recommendation letter, or Essay 1.
