Haas MBA Essay Tips 2014-15

Haas MBA Essay TipsUC Berkeley Haas School of Business has released the essays for 2014-15. 2nd essay remains the same, and the school has realized that total word count of 750 is not enough for the applicant to communicate their goals effectively. This year, the word count has increased to 1400 words – double that of last year.

1) Describe an experience that has fundamentally changed the way you see the world. How did this transform you? (400-500 word maximum)

Since Essay 2 and 3 have specifically asked about professional achievement and goals, this essay should focus on your personal story. Finding that one experience that changed you can be tricky but we all have our Eureka moment. It can be a time when you had to make a tough decision, stand by your friend or be patient with someone when the evidence were to the contrary.

You can narrate how a value was reinforced in your personality with this one experience.

Some values worth mentioning are

• Honesty
• Loyalty
• Listening
• Sincerity
• Patience
• Determination
• Persistence

Essay Sample: Leading a volatile talent (Patience & Listening Skills)

The ego clashes were frequent when Ron was around, and the chain of commands undermined more frequently than I liked. He was a peculiar character. Even with less than 2-years of experience, Ron rose through the ranks with his eye for details, and an uncanny ability to connect with potential customers. That persuaded me to select him over an experienced counterpart. ...........
................
I called him one day to my office, and tried to figure out what was happening. He looked distraught. I had more sympathy than anger when I saw him fidgeting with a pen. I openly asked him “What did I do?”. He broke down. I tried to console him but there was a deeper problem..

2) What is your most significant professional accomplishment? (200-300 word maximum)

To get an understanding on what professional accomplishment is relevant for the AdCom, understand the four Berkeley-Haas key principles: Question the Status Quo; Confidence without Attitude; Students Always; and Beyond yourself.

You cannot artificially match the principles with your values, but make sure that 2 out of four principles, ideally - Confidence without Attitude & Question the Status Quo are included in your narrative. Accomplishments in itself will not impress the AdCom unless it is something universally accepted. It is a risk to second guess. Instead, follow this format:

Problem: Clearly define the problem in one or two sentences

Plan: What plan did you develop to solve the problem?

Action: What actions did you take?

Support: How did your team support your plan and action?

Result: What were the measurable results that you achieved?

Be extremely careful not to sound arrogant when you explain the results. Confidence without Attitude is a principle that Haas strongly believes in.

3) What is your desired post-MBA role and at what company or organization? In your response, please specifically address sub-questions a., b., and c

a. How is your background compelling to this company?
b. What is something you would do better for this company than any other employee?
c. Why is an MBA necessary and how will Haas specifically help you succeed at this company?
(500-600 word maximum for 3a, 3b, and 3c combined)

The question focuses on the short-term post-MBA goal. To answer this question effectively, you have to read the employment report and understand the trends seen in job placement for Haas MBA graduates. If you have a job title or goal in mind that seem impossible with a Haas MBA, it shows that you have not done due diligence during research. It reflects poorly on your motivation and work ethics.

Let’s answer each sub-questions independently.

a. How is your background compelling to this company?
b. What is something you would do better for this company than any other employee?
c. Why is an MBA necessary and how will Haas specifically help you succeed at this company?

Since the three sub-questions are asking about your choice, first pick an Employer that is likely to recruit you from Haas MBA. This Employer might not be interested in your current profile without an MBA. According to the latest Employment report, the top recruiting companies in Haas are:

• Autodesk
• Bain & Company
• BT
• Deloitte Consulting
• General Electric
• Genentech
• Google
• J.P. Morgan
• Kaiser Permanente
• Lazard
• McKinsey & Company
• SolarCity
• The Boston Consulting
• Group
• Visa
• Zynga

According to your post-MBA career path, pick one employer. Research about the mission, values and strengths of the company. Also, learn about the available openings for MBA graduates. Spot the qualifications that are missing in your resume right now to fit the role. It can be a consulting or specialization role. Find the courses and activities in Haas MBA program that would bridge this skill gap. Once you have clearly articulated why Haas MBA is important for this position, explain how you would be a better employee. To do that, you have to connect your pre-MBA experience, work ethics, and team building capability with the post-MBA position.
