How to get the Best Recommendation Letters: 5 Best Practices that will help you

MBA Recommendation Letter Best PracticesRecommendation letter is a key element in MBA Admissions as it gives AdCom an opportunity to learn more about you from a third person. Therefore, it is important that you get recommendation letter from people who knows you well. Getting recommendation letter for MBA Application can be a daunting task if you are not aware of the key success factors. Here are the five best practices that you should adopt to get the best recommendation letter.

1) Top 5 List

If the letter is from someone who has not worked closely with you, it is likely that the recommender would paint a picture of your personality that can be contradicting from who you really are. Create a top 5 list of your favorite recommenders, ordered by the person who has worked more closely with you.

2) Face to Face to Meetings

Send a mail to fix an appointment with the recommender. If the person is from your office, ask for a 1-2 hour appointment to discuss your plan. Face to face meetings are effective as it gives you the opportunity to show enthusiasm for an MBA program. Emails cannot fully convey your passion for a career in management.

3) Expectations

Arrive early for the meeting, and be candid about your plan, and expectations. Recommenders who are honest, and would like to see you succeed will also be candid about their ability to write a compelling Recommendation letter. If there is any reluctance from the recommender, move to the next recommender in the list. Any reluctance can manifest to poorly crafted letter, or less enthusiastic endorsement of your candidacy. Understand these repercussions early on, and find recommenders who want to see you succeed.

4) Supporting Documents & Guidelines

Not all reluctance from recommenders can be attributed to lack of skills or enthusiasm. Some recommenders might not have enough information about the process, the best practices, and deadlines. Pass a copy of your transcript, Summary of your contribution in the project that you have worked with the recommender, Outline of your essay, your resume highlighting work experience and achievements in chronological order (download sample resumes), and guidelines for writing recommendation letter (download recommendation letter guide)

5) Meeting Deadlines

Recommenders might have their plates full during certain times of the year, and it can be especially challenging if the recommender is from Senior Management. Understand this bottleneck, and convey the importance of meeting deadlines when you go for face-to-face meeting. If the recommender hints that, the deadlines are tough to meet, assess whether next round of deadlines is feasible for you. Round two deadlines are equally competitive, so delaying your application in order to get a strong recommendation letter is worth the risk.

Next Step

1) Create your top 5 Recommender List in the following format

Name
Designation Months/Year Worked with You Writing Skill Grade (A+/A/B+)

2) Download Resume Guide with Sample Resumes
