Boats and Stream


GMAT upstream and downstream questions are a little confusing if you are not aware of what upstream and downstream are. This question type also requires the basic distance formula

S ( Distance) = V( Speed) * T( Time)

Speed of Boat in Still Water = Vboat

Speed of Stream = Vstream

Upstream : Speed of boat against the flow of water

Vupstream = Vboat - Vstream

Downstream : Speed of boat with the flow of water

Vdownstream = Vboat+Vstream

Find the speed of a man in still water if he goes upstream at 6 km/h when the rate of stream is 2 km/h.

A. 2 km/h
B. 8 km/h
C. 6 km/h
D. 14 km/h
E. 4 km/h

Vupstream = Vboat - Vstream

6 = Vboat-2

Vboat = 8
