X, Y, Z, and W are integers. The expression X-Y-Z is even and the Expression Y-Z-W is odd. If X is even what must be true?

(a) Y-Z must be odd.
(b) W must be even.
(c) W must be odd.
(d) W must be even.
(e) Z must be odd

any shortcuts to caculate the solution?

You might be tempted to pick

You might be tempted to pick numbers and backsolve it. Don't. Try this strategy instead.

Since Y-Z is repeated in both expressions let us consider it as a single number K

X-K = Even

X is even therefore K must be Even ( Even1 - Even2 = Even)

Y-Z-W can be written as K - W 
We know that K is even and K - W is odd
Even - Odd = Odd
So W is odd

Answer is C
