$8.8 Million - The largest gift by a Yale SOM Alumnus

Lei Zhang MBA '02 has pledged $8.8 Million as gift to the Yale School of Management. This is the largest amount ever to be offered by an alumnus. Zhang, a member of the SOM Board of Advisors and China Board of Advisors, is the founder and managing partner of Hillhouse Capital Management. He started Hillhouse Capital Management in 2005 and rapidly built the largest independent fund in China.

Zhang has pledged to give $8,888,888 for the Yale SOM’s new campus. The announcement came at a special event co-hosted by Levin and Yale School of Management Dean Sharon M. Oster at the Westin Beijing Chaoyang.

Dean Oster thanked Zhang by saying, "I’m delighted to be here in Beijing with so many of our former students, including Lei. His devotion to SOM is remarkable, and the entire SOM community joins me in thanking him for his wonderful support. We look forward to the construction of the auditorium in the new campus that will bear Lei Zhang’s name."
