MIP Politecnico di Milano

Birth Of MIP

One of the great strengths of the MIP MBA program is that it is part of Politecnico di Milano – the premier institute of science, technology, and management in Italy and one of the leading TU in Europe.

MIP MBAIn 1979, a group of leading Italian CEOs expressed the need for having a business school, where business executives could further develop their management skills. The business school MIP was thus created out of a corporation between key Italian CEOs and Politecnico di Milano. In 2003 MIP joined the Department of Management, Economics and Industrial Engineering forming the School of Management of Politecnico di Milano.

MIP Full-Time MBA Admissions

MIP Admissions Officer

F1GMAT: MIP Milano is known for its masters programme. How popular is your MBA programme compared to the masters?

Xixi Fan: Being part of the Politecnico, MIP pays particular attention to technology(particularly up-and-coming technology) because of the role it plays in innovation. From its engineering tradition it has inherited an analytical approach to problem solving - particularly important in the complex contexts where businesses and public administration have to operate - and a project orientation, aiming to find concrete solutions to problems. MIP is accredited by ASFOR (Italian Association of Management Education Institutions) and by EQUIS. Our primary aim is to give our participants strong competences and skills for their entire career. In order to pursue this goal, the MBA Program is based on three pillars: Core Fundamentals, Monographs, Concentrations and Complementary curricula.

F1GMAT:MIP MBA is popular for its international class profile. Can you give our readers a demographic snapshot of your class?

Xixi Fan: The diverse cultural, educational and professional backgrounds allow the student to be in a truly international environment and hone their interpersonal skills through a variety of activities in and out of class.

MIP International Profile

F1GMAT:  2009 has been tough for MBA graduates in terms of employment opportunity. How has MIP coped with recession and in placing its MBA graduates?

Xixi Fan: Our Career Services team works with you in two ways: Firstly, we help you build the skills and networks needed to manage your career planning process. We work to develop and improve individual student characteristics through professional orientation interviews, evaluation of student’s skills, and personalized counseling. Secondly, we carry out business development activities with potential recruiters. In order to bring the participants into frequent contact with potential employers, we provide companies with resources, organizational support and the possibility to become involved in the different stages of the MBA. Throughout the year, we support companies in their search for candidates with the skills and aptitudes most suited to the professional positions available. It is part of our Career Service mission to increase the number of Project Works and job opportunities available to students.

We are also in the business schools careers network-Carnet.

F1GMAT: WSJ had recently quoted that services and financial sectors still remain the top two domains for placements. Which domains were popular among MIP MBA graduates?

MIP Alumni

F1GMAT: Tell us a little bit about yourself and your motivation to do an MBA?

Vineeth: Prior to my MBA, I was an Information technology engineer- hailing from Kerala, India. After nearly 4 years of working in the technology services field along with Infosys and Capgemini, the time was ripe for me to look out for different avenues. Hence, I decided to get my MBA. Currently I'm with IBM India, working as a marketing campaign planner, liaising with Italian counterparts.

F1GMAT: Did you set any selection criteria before short-listing your top five b-schools?

Vineeth: Some selection criteria that I listed before deciding upon the destination school were:

  • Diversity of students (high onus on internationalization)
  • Method of teaching
  • Accreditations from governing bodies.
  • Course Commencement date
  • Location of the school

F1GMAT: In what ways do you think MIP was unique?

Vineeth: MIP has more than 25 years of B-school heritage and is EQUIS accredited. Moreover, it is part of a 150 yr old institution - Politecnico di milano. MIP also offered a scholarship and the possibility of an honor loan. Added to the fact that it is located in Milano- a real good city in Europe makes it a good package overall. People pay to go to Italy on vacation why not study out there, and embark on an interesting career as a result.

F1GMAT: Would you encourage others to attend MIP International MBA Program?

Vineeth: Oh yeah!

The study method consists of a good mix of case studies and classroom lectures. The number and quality of contacts that MIP has in the business world is impressive.

To top it all- MIP is truly international. In my class we had more than 20 different nationalities. The diversity and different experiences makes for testing times during discussions. However, it does serve up an invaluable learning experience, helping build a good foundation to pursue a career in the international business arena. Get in touch with alumni to get a better picture of the institution.

F1GMAT: 2009 was a challenging year for MBA graduates. 2010 is better than last year but the economy has not fully recovered. What advice would you give to MBA graduates coming out this year?

Vineeth: Network, network and network. During the MBA or with events related tot it, you’ll get countless opportunities to hobnob with industry professionals. Make full use of it. Most of the jobs aren’t really published. It'll pay to know someone on the inside, in such cases. Patience is also another aspect that ought to pay dividends in the long run. Don't completely compromise on your goals. You might have to find another route to achieve them.

F1GMAT:
What was the most challenging part of the admissions process?

Vineeth: Trying to convey my motivation to undergo the MBA program, in a limited number of words, probably was much more challenging than the admissions interview, for me.
